How does pricing for screen printing work?

Pricing for screen printing is based on 3 variables.

    1. The number of garments to be decorated
    2. The number of colours in each print
    3. The number of prints on the shirts i.e. Front only or front, back, sleeve etc

To give you an accurate price we need to know these three variables.

Why do more colours cost more?

The way screen printing works we have to set a screen up for every colour in every print. The more screens, the higher the set up costs. It also takes longer to print 4 colours as we need to make 4 separate print passes on each tee.

What is the maximum amount of colours you can print?

We can print up to 12 spot PMS colours on white garments (11 on coloured / dark garments). Another option we have is CMYK process printing, PMS colour matching is not available for this method, and there will be colour shifting within your order.

What file type do you need for the artwork?

For the majority of spot colour work we require a vector image file created in a program like Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand or Corel Draw. They will have file extensions such as PSD., .AI, .EPS, .PDF, .CDR &.FH.

Note that not all files that have these file extensions are necessarily vector image files. For example you can save a bitmap file as nearly all these file types. The file has to be created from scratch in the programs above.

Can I supply my own stock?

No, we DO NOT accept supplied stock. The only way for us to guarantee our work is to supply the whole order to control print variables involved in producing your goods. We carry a large amount of stock on hand which generally allows us to fix any issues that may arise. This allows us to have a replacement guarantee for anything that we supply.

How can I reduce the costs per shirts?

There are a few different ways to reduce the costs involved:

            1. Increase the volume being manufactured
            2. Reduce the number of colours in each design
            3. Reduce the number of locations being decorated

What is the difference between a bitmap and a vector file?

Bitmaps (also called "raster") are made up of pixels, while vector images are composed of mathematical formulas that consist of curves and points. As such, they can be resized at will without losing quality. Making a bitmap larger makes the pixels larger too and the result can be blurry and jagged. Photos are bitmap images, and so are file formats like bmp, jpg, and psd.

Vector images have crisp lines and can be resized as big as a house without losing any image quality. Vector images are created in programs like Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand and Corel Draw.

Why do you require vector images?

Vector images are made out of lines and shapes. This helps us when we need to separate colours. Each shape that has the same colour is separated from the image. This can’t effectively be done with a bitmap image when printing with spot colours.

For occasions where it is acceptable to use bitmap images, please refer to our Digital Printing or CMYK blended print process. They are occasionally acceptable for single colour prints at a minimum of 300dpi. If in doubt, please forward all artwork to your sales consultant for clarification.

What does “convert fonts to outlines” or “embed fonts” mean?

Fonts aren’t automatically transferred with a vector file when it is created in a program like Adobe Illustrator. When using fonts in the program, the text is linked to a font file located on your computer. If that text is not converted to shapes or outlines or “embedded”, in the program, when you send that file to us if we don’t have the font installed on our computer the font you have used will be substituted for a different font that is installed on our system.

To get around this you need to convert fonts to outlines or embed the fonts. To do this in Adobe Illustrator you can right click on the text and choose “Create Outlines” alternatively if you go to Type>Create Outlines or finally you can use the hotkeys Shift+Ctrl+O. This will convert all you type to shapes and it will transport within your file.
